Tiny House ProjectThe Tiny House project is about learning how to live tiny. But before that we build mini scale foam board models of the tiny house using blueprints. We did this with the help of The Sketch up Computer program which allows you to build and design 3D structures.
For this project there was 9 phases that took place, and I will explain them below. |
Phase 1: Building the Team
Discription: Building the teams was a good expirience because I was already working with Nicole on sketch-up and then jackie joined our group. Jackie was a good addition to the team because she liked to take charge and make sure we were on task. But sometimes Nicole and Jackie would seem like they were teaming up on me.
When we were first put into teams I had to work with Jackie and Nicole. When I was working with my team I learned many things involving physics. One of the things I learned was building scale models out of foam board and paper. I also learned how to use blueprints and convert measures to make it scale.
Reflection: I think our team was great because Nicole was good with Blueprints, I was good with Sketch-up, And jackie was good with writing documents. This Team was very sucessful throughout this year. Although we missed a couple of deadlines we always got it done. One of the coolest parts of the project was working with this team
Phase 2: Learning to live Tiny.
Description: One of the most important parts of building a tiny house is learning to live tiny. One of the parts of living tiny is deciding which thinks to keep and which things to throw out. Because people think that happiness comes from material things. Mrs. Regina challenged us to live tiny by giving up 35 things.
When we were learning to live tiny Ms. Regina gave us a challenge when we put 30 items that we don't use or need anymore. We would put it in the bag and wait one whole month. Then all the items that were in the bag that you couldn't remember were given to Ms. Regina because if you could not remember that item then it really wasn't important to you.
Reflection: I think that this challenge was a great way to learn to live tiny because it detaches you from materialistic things. It was also cool that only if you could remember that item you left in the bag you get to keep. This showed that if you couldn't remember that item after 30 days then it wasn't that important anyways.
Phase 3: Learning to Build a park.
Description: The Building of a park at first was seen as just a way out of school but as I got there I learned that it was much more. The park was in populated area in down town and started as just a small grass field. The first thing that needed to be done was shoveling molch from a pile into the park to cover the grass. Then I was chosen to lift heavy things of wood.
Phase 3: Learning to build a park was a fun yet challenging. I mostly lifted heavy wood planks or logs. One of my learning Moments was working with cement and learning the correct mixture. Then we had to prop up these heavy logs that would have cement hold them in. We also had to shovel a large amount of molch into the park.
Reflection: I think building at the park was fun and helpful because I started out not yet found a group to hang out with yet. for the carpool I was told to ride with Stephen. In the car was Paolo, Stephen, Brandon, Miguel, and PJ. Then once we got to the park we were selected to shovel molch and carry heavy logs from point A to point B. I worked with the same group I had carpooled with at the park and had become friends with all of them. My most memorable moment was learning how to mix cement with a wheel barrel.
Phase 4: Choosing our team banner
Description: This was an essential part to making a team, The way this worked is everyone had to create to the logo that they thought fit the name "Team Sempiternal". The logo I created was an endless roller coaster that was shaped like an 8 or the infinty symbol which was a symbol for the eternal part in the name "sempiternal. The Logo that won was a logo created by Paola, Nicole, and Anna. Their logo was the rings from the band named Sempiternal and had a tree on top of it with the roots wrapping around the rings.
Choosing the team banner was a difficult task, We had to find the perfect Logo for this team. We each created a design and had elimination voting. The logo was created by Paola, Nicole, and Anna. This logo was to show that we ware a Badass team. This was the logo from the band "Sempiternal" and had a large try ontop of it and had a sign hanging from the branches that said "Sempiternal".
Reflection: Looking back I wonder how different our team would have been with my logo instead. I dont think my logo would have been as good as the one we had but I am curious to know. Mabey the team would dress differently, act differently, or even Have a different team project. All of this is a mystery to me but i'd like to keep it that way because I think the year was perfect the way it was.
Phase 5: Interviewing and designing with the artists
Description: Interviewing the artist was another challenging phase because it was kind of awkward at first but then became difficult when we had to keep up with what she was saying and writing while she speaks. The second difficult thing is when we where asking questions they didn't really stay in chronological order such as asking about her college and then her childhood and then her favorite memories. But a good part was getting all the information we needed to make a house according to her prefrences. The interview was interesting when we started to talk about the house and what to put in it.
Interviewing the artist was another challenging part because we had to come up with questions, follow up questions, and keep all of her answers on record. once the interview began we sat at a table and started asking the questions that we prepared. The interview went a lot smoother than I had expected. Then once we got back to class we had to use the recording of the interview to make the biographical artical.
Reflection: Looking Back the interview was a fun but challenging part in the tiny house project. The hardest part was writing what she was saying because sometime I couldn't write as fast as she talked. But a celebration of the interview is getting all of the information for the book. This was a great part of the project because we got to learn more about the artist and be able to connect with her.
Phase 6: Presenting Sketch up models to the Artist
Description: Presenting blueprints and sketch up to our artist is a great way to display all of our designs and work. This was a fun part of the project becauswe we got to brag about the work we did and watch as our artist became amazed with the product. This was a great expierience with the artist
Presenting Blueprints was great because our artist really liked them. We presented all of our work and displayed our sketch-up designs. The day we presented our artist was just amazed by our design .
Reflection: I think that this was a really exciting part of our project because it is just like those TV shows where designers surprise people with awesome designs. This was one of the times where we saw our artist really amazed and surprised.
Phase 7: Fundraising
Description: This was the phase was the part where we needed money to make this project happen. This process involved creating a kickstarter campaign. We would call random companies to donate to our project. This was one of the more fun parts of the project.
Fundraising was hard because some people didnt want to donate to us. We ended up not having enough for this entire project. Then Parker had contacted Qualcomm And they said that they would donate over 10,000 dollars. Then we gathered our top students to give a presentation to try to impressed Qualcomm.
Reflection: My thoughts on this part of the project is that it was kind of nerve racking because we were not close to our goal at all. We were down by like $13,000, but then PJ called Qualcomm and asked them to donate and they said if they like our presentation they would donate 10,000$ once that was finished we surprised Bob because he didn't think we would be able to do it.
Phase 8: A building company is born.
We have been through so much together as a team that I feel like we are a company working for a buisness that builds Tiny Houses. This was the part where we realize how far we have come and how much progression we have made throughout the intire 9th grade year.
The team has now expirienced learning to live tiny, how to build a park, working with tools, making scale blueprints, making scale models, and building a tiny house. This is when I realized how far we came from just raising money to actually building a house I realized this in our final Exhibition.
Reflection: This Was when I had to look back at how far I have come in the Tiny House Project. This was a pretty cool thing because I got to see my progression throughout the year. I realized this during the final Exhibition.
Phase 9: Exhibition
Description: Exhibition was awesome because we would answer peoples questions regarding the tiny house and even design a house for them using a computer program. Exhibition is where we display all of our work to everyone who wants to see. We would have 3 stations.
Exhibition was fun because we were finally able to display every thing that we worked on the whole year. It was a great way to display all of our work in a festive way. The Exhibition was like a great accomplishment of the entire team Sempiternal.
Reflection: This was the coolest part because we had stations and I was designing a house for People who came to our stations. This was the time when we got to show off how much we have done. And we had music and shark tank and So many projects everywhere.
